Band Saw Box
Process Descriptions

• Lathed Top

Center rectangular stock with chuck and secure with tail-stock. Turn wood with roughing gouge until round. Remove tailstock to shape base of Top. Shape neck of Top. Sand to finest grit. Apply Sanding sealer & lightly sand when dry. Apply wax and burnish with paper. Cut off Top. Lightly clamp base of top in chuck to sand and wax tip of neck.

• Brazed Form

Cut steel rods. Braze random shapes to create standing piece.

• Welded Form

Clean Washers of Oil with soap and water. Arrange and weld standing form. Grind and file. Spray Paint, wax or lacquer.

• Cast Form

Carve well finished object from soap. Create mold of object with Alginate in cup. Carefully cut mold to release soap form. Replace mold in cup and cast with white plastic.

• Band Saw Box with Lid

Layout desired shape on paper to determine glue up requirements. Glue to create solid block. Draw desired shape for box. Band saw outside shape. Using off-cut for stability, Cut off 1/4” top and bottom. Band saw inside shape out of remaining larger shape. Cut this slice off of negative cut out for lid lip. Glue band saw slit back. Sand inside of hollow box. Glue lid lip on lid using box as guide. Glue on bottom. Sand to shape final box. Apply sanding sealer. Apply wax and burnish with paper.

• Mitered Box with Drawer

Chop 1 x 6 at 30” on chop saw. Cut 4 mitered lengths from short board at 5”. Glue up box with two strap clamps. Rip remaining board to fit internal dimension of box. Cut 1/8” rebate along bottom of board. Measure and cut mitered lengths for internal drawer. Cut drawer bottom from whiteboard. Glue-up drawer. Cut spline joint into corners of external box. Sand strips to fit spline joint and glue. Cut off splines and sand both boxes. Apply sanding sealer and Wax.

• Machine Sewn Bean Bag

Cut two 6” x 6” squares of fabric. Align fabric face to face. Sew three and a half sides with a ¼” seam allowance. Turn inside out through opening. Fill with beans. Hand stitch opening, tie off, and hide thread.

• Felted Form

Wrap found object in wool batting. “String” with liquid soap. Hold under hot water, and apply enough pressure to create suds. Continue to work warm soapy water into form until fibers felt. Continue until fulled.
