Contemporary Seminar: 1917-Present
FAUX
FAUX is a set of experiments in fabricating artists and artworks and situating them convincingly in real art historical contexts. Dada, Minimalism, Conceptual Art, Performance, Text Art, Installation, Relational Aesthetics, Land Art, Abstract Expressionism and more.

“In the Manner of. . .”

Select a movement we have considered in the second half of this semester (Abstract Expressionism, Pop Art, Minimalism, Post-Minimal Abstraction, Performance Art, Earthworks, Multiculturalism, Video, etc) and:

1. The Artwork

Create an original artwork that aspires to meet the aims of your chosen movement. Document your work. You must submit a full-color reproduction (8.5" x 11" image) of your original work. Do not submit the actual work.

2. The Statement

Write a 500-word artist statement justifying the work as a manifestation of the those aims. Identify the aims of “your” movement. Locate those aims within the context of the era in which the movement operated. Connect the aesthetics and/or mode(s) of construction of your work to those of the movement.

**This is an exercise in mimicry. Do not create your own movement. DO create an original work that the untrained eye might think belongs to the past. A specific past.***
