Thesis Project (detail)
Ashlei Stewart
Ashlei took 2nd place at the 2013 Mississippi State University Research Symposium in Arts & Humanities.

"My work examines the relationship between an individual and his or her body - the anxieties we feel about its appearance, the limitations it places on our abilities, and the fear we experience at its inevitable deterioration.

The intent of this series of work is to create a theoretical experience for the participant, achieved through a combination of sculptural and potentially wearable objects, meant to address the abject body in relation to physical alteration and medical treatment.

The garments I am designing subvert the traditional aim of fashion - to enhance the figure - by constricting the movement of the body and contorting it into difficult positions. These objects provide a conduit for individual discovery and insight into the experience of deterioration."
