Carin's Wedding Dress and
Dad's Hawaiian Shirt
2013
Restructured clothing
Apprx. 4 x 4 x 4 in., ea.
The event of Carin's divorce altered the meaning inherent in the material and form of her wedding dress. Weddings and divorces both suggest notions of finality.
When my father died in 2007, I kept his shirts in my closet. The material of those shirts is making its way into my practice. Dad's Hawaiian Shirt is an attempt to find and preserve an essence.
Together, these pieces form a memorial.
The guiding impulse for this series is to build a material history, to restructure an object so that past and present identities exist in tandem.
